back to poetry

  WARNING
by Ricky Davis

The act of remembering may lead to:
• Embarrassment, especially in the details of certain evenings spent in
over-sentimental silence of another’s arms or one’s imaginary own. (See
also, nausea.)
• Overturning bouts of self-criticism occurring in corners of dark
restaurants, realizations of selfishness echoing in cries of “WANT! WANT!
WANT!”
• Excursions into unknown levels of guilt, trodden only by dark Russian
minds hidden in basements.
• Massive silt deposits on the banks of awareness causing delays and
crowded benches in departure bay.
• Resounding desire to stop oneself from considering The Mind Is Only A
Partially Unopened Box, or Not Everything Escapes, or (most terrifyingly
of all) the grime on our hands is too cumulative to rinse away 2-3 times
daily.

Ricky Davis is a student at Washington College, where he plans to study
English and Creative Writing. He is also involved in several musical
ensembles on campus, and plans on forming several new projects this coming
semester. He hopes to eventually become some mixture of a teacher, a
musician and a poet. Until then, he plans on staying in school for as long
as possible (within reason) and honing his skills further.
