Beauty by Laura LeHew A blurb review by Cynthia Reeser
Laura LeHew, of Uttered Chaos Press, publishes her first chapbook, Beauty, with Tiger’s Eye Press. Beauty is a collection of fractured fairy tales in poetic form. Including haibuns, prose poems, and variable form poetry, the volume includes work titled, “The Boy Who Cried Fire,” “The Tortoise and the Hare Redux,” “Blondie and the 3 Baristas,” and others. As can be expected, each piece contains a seed of a familiar fairy tale, but the original premises are turned on their heads, expanded upon, and modernized. An example from “The Tortoise and the Hare Redux”:
Two stand-out pieces are the title poem and “Drawing Down the Moon,” a poem written after W.S. Merwin, where the latter work makes interesting use of form. LeHew is an award-winning poet whose work has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize.
